FOCAPO 2008 (Foundations of Computer-Aided Process Operations) is the 5th international conference offered by the CACHE organization to review the advances and address the challenges of process operations. FOCAPO 2008 will bring together and foster interaction among world-renowned experts from academia and industry, researchers and practitioners from government laboratories and several industries, and graduate students. The major theme of the FOCAPO 2008 conference is "Multi-Scale Integration of R&D, Manufacturing, and Optimization for Enterprise-Wide Operations".
The main objective of the conference is to create a forum where the main contributions of process modeling and optimization in the area of process operations will be discussed and the remaining challenges identified. It is our goal to expand the boundaries of process operations to include both, small and large, fast and slow, scales and probe the problems that arising when modeling considers smaller scales down to the molecular level as well as when the whole supply chain is incorporated. Bringing together academic and industrial participants from around the world, the conference will provide a unique environment for discussion of the past, present and future successes in the area of computational process operations, but also the missed opportunities and failures. This will lead to identification of the main road blocks and efficient ways to overcome these difficulties so that there is an efficient collaboration of academic institutions and process oriented industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, biochemicals, energy and environmental, food and beverages, electronics and materials.
In this context some of the FOCAPO 2008 session topics being planned are Integration of Control, Scheduling, and Planning; Enterprise-wide Optimization; Modeling, Optimization, and Information Technologies; Forecasting, Finance, and Risk Management; Sustainable Resource Systems; and Emerging Technologies in the areas of sustainable resources, multiscale modeling and systems biology.
